“Cavafy: Polis & Politics; Civitas & Civilization” is the theme of the 2019 Cavafy Symposium organized by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture (HFC) on October 1 in Cairo and October 2 and 3 in Alexandria. Τhis international symposium on the renowned Alexandria-born Greek poet takes place two years after the especially successful Cavafy Symposium 2017, also organized by HFC in memory of Kostis Moskof. With the participation of literary figures and distinguished scholars from many countries, the 2019 Cavafy Symposium is being organized under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece in Cairo and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with the Ministries of Culture of Egypt and Greece, the Cairo Opera, and the Greek Cultural Center in Cairo, and with the support of the Hellenic Communities of Alexandria and Cairo, the Department of Communication and Digital Media of the University of Western Macedonia and other public and private institutions. Parallel cultural events at the Cairo Opera and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina include awards to Egyptian authors, two recitals – of poetry set to music with Kostas Thomaidis & Rita Antonopoulou, and Takis Farazis on the piano and the Khaled Shams group, and of Cavafy set to music by Kostas Ganotis with the participation of Haig Yasdjian (oud) and Nikos Kalantzakos (keyboards) – and the photography exhibition “Hidden Memory – The Averof Greek School of Alexandria” by Maria Stefossi.
